The SOTS Book List

The Society's annual survey of new work on the Old Testament — and one of the first places a new book is reviewed.

What it covers

The year in Old Testament scholarship

The Book List reviews up to five hundred books a year — not only on the Old Testament itself but across the fields that surround it: archaeology, epigraphy, Hebrew and the Northwest Semitic languages, ancient Near Eastern history, the Hellenistic world, early Judaism and social anthropology.

Its value is its comprehensiveness and its speed. It appears each June, is sent to every paid-up member who wants a copy, and is also published as an issue of the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament.

Practicalities

Getting a copy

Where the current issue lives, how members receive it, and who to write to about a book for review.

The SOTS Book List provides short reviews of up to 500 books a year. It includes publications not only on the Old Testament directly but also on many related areas, including archaeology, epigraphy, Hebrew and related Semitic languages (especially Northwest Semitic), relevant ancient Near Eastern history and literature, the Hellenistic world, early Judaism, and social anthropology. The main value of the Book List is its comprehensiveness and its immediacy, in that it is usually among the first periodicals to review a book.

The Book List appears annually in June, and a copy is sent free to all paid-up members of the Society who wish to receive a hard copy. Members who are satisfied with online access can opt out of receiving a hard copy by notifying the Membership Secretary of that decision. The Book List is also published as Issue 5 each year of the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, included in the price of the annual subscription.
